Duran Duran Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Campaign Interviews Uru June 16, 2010

UruBelle Uru - Vocals, Piano, Keys, Synths, Backing Vocals, and Percussion!

This Nigerian born girl who dances to the beat of her own drum is proud to be from Africa, but even more happy to be “a child of the globe.” Growing up on three continents, this singer/songwriter has been influenced by cultures from around the world. As well as English and other languages, she speaks her native African tongue, Igbo.

Uru put some time aside and sat down with me, Ladyaslan, and discussed her music and new album and her thoughts on our campaign of Duran Duran to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame~

Ladyaslan DDTTRH: Do you think Duran Duran deserve to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and why?

Uru: Actually, the question should be, “Why are they not already?!” Obviously they were pioneers of a great sound and style that has influenced the music industry up till today.

Ladyaslan DDTTRH: Your prose, “Butter Cakes in Baskets,” what was the influence behind that writing?

Uru: Something I saw, somewhere in my mind. That’s how it works for me. “Butter Cakes in Baskets,” is a perfect place caught in time. My reality is what I create. Imagination is one of the greatest gifts we all possess, but only if we use it. If you think it and believe it, you create it.

Ladyaslan DDTTRH: What contributions and influences do you feel Duran Duran contributed to the world of music and fashion and social awareness?

Uru: Well as I said before, musically they have influenced so many, but speak of fashion…. They rocked it! Unafraid, and so awesome! You can easily see their influence today in many bands and all. And they have always been very socially aware and involved in humanitarian efforts across the globe.

Ladyaslan DDTTRH: With so much tragedy in the world; such as the recent “Gulf Oil Spill” stateside and the ongoing issues in the Delta Region (of your country) the abuse and annihilation of the “Nigerian Witch Children” where do you find the solace to be so positive and march forward?

Quote
Uru: If I were to give in to the negativity, the negativity wins. I try to stay positive (as hard as that may be sometimes). I find solace in trying to make a difference. There is power in words. I am singer, poet and songwriter. My voice and my words are my weapon against negativity.

Ladyaslan DDTTRH: What are your favorite Duran Duran song(s) and / or video(s)?

Uru: Wow there are so many great songs, but “Ordinary World,” is special. I love the video too.

Ladyaslan DDTTRH: How did you become involved in being a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations?

Uru: I was approached by an organization within the U.N. I accepted of course. All I’ve ever wanted to do apart from create great music and sing, was to make a positive change in the world. We all can do that if only we try.

My AIDS Awareness Campaign with my song “Wrap Up” has been very successful in spreading the message of safe sex. Nobody should be dying of AIDS from simple ignorance of how to protect themselves.

On my new Album, I wrote a song “Dear Hunter,” inspired by what I had seen in the Delta region of Nigeria (my country). The land and the people have been ravaged because of what the big oil companies have done there. I released the song early because after the outrage of the “Oil Spill,” here in the U.S., I thought people should see what’s been quietly going on in Africa. Way beyond an oil spill! More like a complete destruction. Where is the outrage for that? To hear “Wrap Up” and “Dear Hunter:” please see my blog and lyrics for “Dear Hunter.”
Ladyaslan DDTTRH: If you could remake a Duran Duran song, which one would it be?

Uru: I don’t know. If a song is already great, sometimes a remake just can’t do it justice. On my new album, “People,” I’ve done my first remake of a huge hit from way back, but still, I wrote into it, added my own lyrics and music, and totally re-arranged it. I won’t say the name of the song now. You’ll hear it when it comes out!

Ladyaslan DDTTRH: Who is Tantrum Records? How did they find you?

Uru: Tantrum Records is a multifaceted label. They have given me the support that any artist could only dream of. They were the first and only label to understand that I am an African artist with a diverse sound. Much respect!

Ladyaslan DDTTRH: Do you think 80’s bands, such as Duran Duran, or any “New Wave” or “Synth Pop” band have a chance in the music world as it is today; too share the airwaves, as in a rebirth of retro bands?

Uru: I think everything is possible with music. Music is a universal language. Times may change, but good music will always stay. Yes, Duran Duran can stand their ground today.

Ladyaslan DDTTRH: Any tour dates or new songs in the mix? What can your fans expect from you this year?

Uru: This year… New T.V. Show and new album dropping soon! I’m so excited! Hope everyone will be too! [Read more]
